Alexander Bah is expected to miss the rest of the season after sustaining a knee injury during training on Friday.

The Portugal international, who joined Benfica from Sporting Lisbon in January, has been ruled out for six months and will undergo surgery at the end of March.

Bah's departure comes as a blow to Benfica, who are currently second in the Portuguese league table and have made it through to the group stages of the Europa League.

The 24-year-old had scored three goals and provided two assists in 15 appearances for the Eagles this season.

However,Bundesliga Express he has struggled with injuries throughout his career and has only managed to play for Benfica once before being loaned out to Celta Vigo last year.

Benfica manager Jorge Jesus said: "We are very disappointed that Alexander won't be able to continue playing for us until next season."

"We wish him all the best for his recovery and we hope that he can return to full fitness soon."

Bah's absence means that Benfica will now look to find a replacement for the injured player, although there are no obvious candidates available in their squad.

The club's medical staff will now work closely with Bah's doctors to develop a treatment plan for his rehabilitation and ensure that he returns to full fitness as quickly as possible.

Bah's injury will also mean that Benfica will have to make changes to their team formation, with the club having already lost key players such as Joao Cancelo and Tiago on loan elsewhere.

It remains to be seen whether Benfica will be able to compete for top spot in the league without Bah, but they will certainly need to work hard to fill the void left by the striker's absence.
